THE VIBRATIONAL SPECTRA OF SOME MONOSUBSTITUTED BENZENE DERIVATIVES OF GROUP VIA ELEMENTS

Ohio State UniversityAbstract:
The vibrational frequencies for $(C_{6}H_{5})_{2}Se$ , $(C_{6}H_{5})_{2} Te$, $(C_{6}H_{5})_{2} Se_{2}$, $(C_{6}H_{5})_{2} Te_{2}$, $(C_{6}H_{5}S)_{2}Hg$, and $(C_{6}H_{5}Se)_{2}Hg$ have been completely assigned an were consistent with the vibrational assignments for $(C_{6}H_{5})_{2}0$, $(C_{6}H_{5})_{2}S$, and $(C_{6}H_{5})_{2}S_{2}$ reported elsewhere. Further, whereas $(C_{6}H_{5})_{2}0$ and to a lesser extent $(C_{6}H_{5})_{2}S$ show vibrational spectra consistent with nonequivalence of the two phenyl rings attached to the central atom, the spectra of the other molecules show little evidence for such non-equivalency of the two phenyl rings. The vibrational assignments for $(C_{6}H_{5})_{2}Te$ confirmed the linearity of the Gordy Rule plot of the t-vibration for Group VIA Elements.
