The absorption spectrum of cyclopropane exhibits two types of transitions; “forbidden” transitions in the spectral region of 1950--1700 \AA ($\epsilon \sim 0.1 - 1$) and allowed transitions having $\epsilon \sim 4000$ at 1700-1400 \AA. The Lowest excited states in cyclopropane resulting from the configuration (3a$_{1}$)$^{2} (\le^{\prime\prime})^{4} (3e^{\prime})^{3}$ (4e$^{\prime\prime})^{1}$ belong to the representations $A_{1}^{\prime}$, $A_{2}^{\prime}$, and $E^{\prime}$ of point group $D_{3{h}}$. Only the transition to the latter state is electric dipole allowed from the ground state. The CD spectrum of dimethyl cyclopropane reveals a broad negative band peaking at 1845 {\AA} that does not have any corresponding band in the absorption. The large g value $({g} = \frac{\Delta\epsilon}{\epsilon})$ of this transition leads to an unambiguous assignment of this band to a ground state $\rightarrow$ $A_{2}^{\prime}$ magnetic dipole allowed transition. We are able to assign the second forbidden state $A_{1}^{\prime}$. This state is both magnetic and electric dipole forbidden and this fact accounts for the non-appearance in the CD spectrum of the absorption bands assigned to this state. The MCD spectrum of cyclopropane will be explained in terms of A” and “B” terms. Two allowed degenerate valence excited states ($E^{\prime}$ symmetry) were found in the investigated region.
