dc.description.abstractOccupational stress is a safety concern, affecting individual and organizational performance. Nurses at an academic medical center steadily reported increased stress scores over a year-long nurse residency program (NRP). Evidence shows that Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) improve self-awareness, enhance patient safety, and increase the ability for nurses to be present. The PICOT question for this project was, in new to practice nurses (P), how does the revising stress curriculum (I) to an established self-care/coping nurse residency curriculum (C) affect the perceived level of stress, job satisfaction, intention to leave one's position, and quality of mindfulness (O) over 6 months (T)? An MBI of mindful breathing was delivered March 2020 NRP cohort (n=29). Nurses received 3 MBI techniques over 6 months. Implementation strategies included discussion on mindfulness, brief technique instruction, and access to the recorded techniques. Surveys evaluating perceived stress, job satisfaction, and intention to leave position were completed at the time of hire and 6 months after employment. Internal surveys provided qualitative feedback about MBI techniques. The Cognitive Affective Mindfulness Survey-Revised (CAMS-R) was given at seminars 1 and 3 to assess the quality of participants' mindfulness. Perceived stress scores and intention to leave position did not significantly differ from benchmark data at 6 months. Internal seminar surveys indicated a positive response to the MBI. CAMS-R showed no significant change in the level of mindfulness. The project occurred during the pandemic, requiring adaptations to implementation, including delivery and duration.
