X-RAY PHOTOELECTRON SPECTRA OF THE VALENCE AND CORE ELECTRONS IN N, N-DIMETHYLNITRAMINE

Ohio State UniversityAbstract:
The binding energies of the core and valence electron orbitals of N, N-Dimethylnitramine have been investigated at $-100^{0} C$ using a Varian IEE-15 Spectrometer with Mg Anode (1253.6 eV). The ls spectrum of nitrogen shows two peaks at 400 eV and 405 eV. The former peak is due to the amine nitrogen whereas the latter is due to the nitrogen in the nitro group. The valence electron spectrum extends from 5 eV to 40 eV and consists of five major peaks. The spectrum has been discussed in terms of available molecular orbital calculations and a tentative assignment of the levels has been made. The results form a prelude to the understanding of cyclic nitramines with relatively non-planar nitramine groups.
