Abstract

The hydroperoxyl free radical, $HO_{2}$, has been produced in sufficient yields for matrix infrared spectroscopic investigation by the microwave discharge of water vapor or hydrogen and oxygen mixtures diluted in argon. The same matrix infrared spectrum is also observed in the photolytic reactions of $O_{2}$ and HI in argon. Isotopic substitution confirms the identity of the radical. In accord with the earlier infrared observations, the $HO_{2}$ radical is found to possess $C_{s}$ symmetry; the nonequivalence of the two oxygen atoms is confirmed. The present investigation clarifies the vibrational assignments and permits calculation of a more accurate potential function.
