INFRARED SPECTRUM OF DINITROGEN TRIOXIDE

The infrared spectrum of gaseous $N_{2}O_{3}$ at room temperature is difficult to analyze due to the interfering absorptions of $NO_{2}$ and $N_{2}O_{4}$ which are also present. At reduced temperatures however, the vapor pressure of $NO_{2}$ and $N_{2}O_{4}$ becomes negligible with respect to that of $N_{2}O_{4}$. Utilizing path lengths up to 30 meters and temperatures around -- $120^{\circ} C$ the vibration rotation bands of $N_{2}O_{3}$ are easily recorded and analyzed.
