Abstract
The Peace Corps sends the best and brightest Americans abroad on behalf of the United States to tackle the most pressing needs of people around the world. Volunteers work at the grassroots level to develop sustainable solutions that address challenges in education, health, economic development, agriculture, environment and youth development. Through their service, volunteers gain a unique cultural understanding and a life-long commitment to service that positions them to succeed in today's global economy.
Description
IMPACT. 1: When they return home, volunteers bring their knowledge and experiences – and a global outlook – back to the United States, enriching the lives of those around them. President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961 to foster a better understanding between Americans and people of other countries. Throughout Peace Corps' 55-year history, nearly 220,000 Americans of all ages have served in 140 countries worldwide. -- 2. The Ohio State University is the 9th highest producer of Peace Corps volunteers among large universities, with 49 alums currently serving. To date, 1,790 alumni from Ohio State have traveled abroad to serve as volunteers, making OSU the No. 9 all-time producer of Peace Corps volunteers.
