CIRCULATING LOOP FOR USE IN INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY

“A loop consisting of a pump for circulating corrosive gases through an infrared cell has been constructed. The loop contains a piston pump actuated by external magnets, a 6-cm path-length Monel infrared cell of 25-cc volume, and two U-tubes of $\/4$ nickel tubing. The primary loop, of 111-ee volume, can be blocked and the flow diverted through a 687-cc ballast volume. It can be used to study chemical reactions. The spectrum can be scanned to identify the products of a reaction, or the spectrometer held at constant wavelength and the rate of production of a particular component studied. It can also be adapted to noting changes in vapor pressure with temperature. This loop has porven useful far beyond initial expectation. For example, it has been used to develop preparations and purification for $XeF_{2}$ and $XeOF_{2}$ and for the production of small quantities of pure $XeF_{1}$ and $XeOF_{2}$ for other research problems. “
