METHANE IN CONDENSED OXYGEN, NITROGEN, AND ARGON
Publisher:
Ohio State UniversityAbstract:
“The spectrum of $CH_{4}$ in the legion of the infrared active stretching fundamental at $3020\;cm^{-1}$ has been observed in dilute (approximately 1 part in $10^{5}$) liquid solutions of oxygen, nitrogen, and argon, and clear crystalline argon solution at $78^{\circ} K$. The $\nu_{3}$ fundamental was found at 3017, 3016, and $3018\;cm^{-1}$ in oxygen, nitrogen, argon liquid solutions, respectively, and at $3023\;cm^{-1}$ in the clear crystalline argon solution. The observed bands were symmetric with half widths of 21, 19, 27, and $27\;cm^{-1}$ for the oxygen, nitrogen, argon liquid solutions, and argon solid solution respectively. No temperature dependence on the half width, solvent shift, or band shape was found in the case of the oxygen liquid solution iii the range of $90-55^{\circ} K$.”
