THE INFRARED SPECTRUM OF CO IN ARGON

‘‘The complexity of the infrared spectrum of carbon monoxide in the solid and in various inert matriees is well $known^{1,2}$. In the latter case, however, the relative intensities of the various spectral features are strongly dependent on the depostition conditions of the sample. The spectra of CO in argon observed at various dilutions, window temperatures and deposition rates show that carbon monoxide forms aggregates but does not rotate, in argon matrices. The monomer matrix shift is about the same for both $C^{12}O$ and $C^{13}O$, but the polymer frequency of $C^{12}O$ is shifted more than the corresponding band of the $C^{13}$-isotope because of vibrational coupling.”
