As a result of determining the microstructures of many synthetic polyisoprenes some conclusions have been reached about the origins of certain bands in the spectra of Hevea and balata. Some of these confirm previous assignments but some have not previously been assigned. Support for these is obtained from polarization spectra, spectra of hydrogenated polyisoprenes, spectra of maleic anhydride adducts and polydimethylbutaidne spectra.
