THE PRESSURE INDUCED ROTATIONAL ABSORPTION SPECTRUM OF HYDROGEN
Publisher:
Ohio State UniversityAbstract:
“The pressure-induced rotational spectrum of hydrogen has been studied in the pure gas and in mixtures with He, Ne, A. Kr. Xe and $N_{2}$ total pressures up to 200 atm. were used at $25^{\circ} C$, $-80^{\circ} C$ and $-190^{\circ} C$. With CsBr optics in the spectrometer and pressure vessel four maxima were observed in the region 300 to $1400 cm^{-1}$; the frequencies of these correspond to the rotational lines S(0), S(1), S(2) and S(3). Except for the case of Xe the variation of the integrated absorption coefficient with density indicates that only binary collisions are involved. A calculation of the absorption coefficients based on the model of quadrupole interaction gives good agreement with the experimented values except for He; in this latter case the quadrupole interaction is small, probably of the same order of magnitude as the overlap interaction. The results of an analysis of the line shape will be discussed.”
