THE INFRARED DETERMINATION OF THE SLOPE OF THE THREAD IN HELICAL MOLECULES

When the orientations of two nonparallel transition moments in the repeating unit of a polymer molecule are known, it is possible, using the dichroic ratios of the corresponding bands in an oriented sample of a helical polymer, to calculate the slope of the thread independently of the degree of orientation. The applicability and the limitations of the method are discussed with special reference to proteins.
