dc.description.abstractThe $J = 1 \rightarrow 0$ rotation transitions of $CF_{3}H$ and $CF_{3}D$ in their vibrationally excited states have been measured with a microwave spectrometer using a heated absorption cell. The absorption cell consists of a plane-parallel waveguide, 20 feet in length, which can be heated to $600^\circ C$. The detection sensitivity of the spectrometer is about $10^{-9}$/cm. The observed lines have been assigned to their correct vibration levels by comparing their relative intensities at various temperatures with the relative intensities calculated from the Boltzman factor of the known vibrational frequencies. For $CF_{3}H, J = 1 \rightarrow 0$ transitions have been observed for the excited $\nu_2$, $\nu_3$, $\nu_4$, $\nu_5$, $\nu_6$, $2\nu_6$, $3\nu_6$ and $\nu_3+\nu_6$ vibrational states. For $CF_{3}D$, transitions have been observed in the $\nu_2$, $\nu _3$, $\nu_6$, $2\nu_6$ and $3\nu_6$ states, but the identification of the lines for the $\mu_4$ and $\mu_5$ states is not yet certain. From these measurements together with others to be carried out in the near future on the $J = 2 \rightarrow 1$ line and from the infrared determination of $\alpha_{1}$, it will be possible to obtain accurate values of $B_{e}$ for both $CF_{3}H$ and $CF_{3}D$. An anomalous Stark effect has been observed in the $J = 1 \rightarrow 0$ lines of both the $\nu_4$ and $\nu_5$ states of $CF_3H$. This effect is being investigated further.en_US
