This paper discusses opportunities and obstacles for a uniform prudential regulation and supervision framework across the Central American countries. It highlights the recent evolution from a system of repressive rules to a system focused on prudential norms, to reduce opportunistic behavior in banks. Existing and proposed norms are contrasted with those recommended by the Basle Committee.
