The first of five portraits of Israeli statesman David Ben Gurion, with his quotation which reads "Any man who does not believe in miracles is not a realist." A first-state proof [CMA 2013.057.004] is loosely defined with blue and black marker drawing. Second-state proofs [CMA 2001.034.149] depict a gaunt figure against a darker background and have added chalk drawing. In 1984 this image was reproduced as an offset lithograph in an edition of 350. A similar composition [CMA 2001.034.421] was produced in the late 1950s as well.
