Half-length portrait of poet William Carlos Williams standing under a tree, against a dark background [CMA 2001.034.350]. A first-state proof [CMA 2001.034.351] depicts Williams in a white jacket and short tie with a slightly misshapen head, below undefined foliage at the top of the plate. A tartan pattern was added to the jacket in the second state, along with aquatint texture to the foliage above. One of the second-state impressions, titled Egghead in the Garden [CMA 2001.034.413], has ink drawing added to Williams's features, most notably reshaping his head and lengthening his tie.
