Heather Allen discusses her academic career, from attending community college in Southern California to earning a Ph.D. at University of California-Irvine, and finally, to becoming an assistant professor, then associate professor, at The Ohio State University. Allen also discusses the climate for women in the Department of Chemistry and also in the department after it merged with Biochemistry. She also discusses those who mentored her, and her instances of mentoring; how women and members of underrepresented groups are perceived by students and others; and finally, general gender and diversity issues in an academic setting.
