STEAM Exchange presentations on the theme of Community. (1) Meris Mandernach, Head of Research Services, The Ohio State University Libraries -- In library land we often approach our work, from web design to resource acquisitions, in terms of distinct user groups: undergrad, grad, faculty. In order to meet emerging user needs and anticipate trends in research behavior, the library is examining the OSU community in order to take a proactive approach and envision a new holistic model of “research services” that more appropriately encompasses reference expertise in the right environment at the right time for the right constituency. The focus of the talk is on historical trends in libraries to current practices at OSU to future plans in research services. (2) Jim Fowler, Post-doc, Mathematics, The Ohio State University -- The universe (which others call the Lattice) is composed of a giant square grid; "community'' means which points on the grid interact with which other points on the grid. Games are played on that grid, and dependent on the size and shape of our community, dramatically different outcomes ensue; these tales are told with pictures and movies. (3) Aurelie Vialette, Assistant Professor, Iberian Studies, The Ohio State University -- Aurelie talks about workers' cultural community in 19th-century Spain, especially how the practice of choral music among the working class was set as a model to create non revolutionary communities. Moderator: Johanna Devaney, Assistant Professor, Music Theory and Cognition, The Ohio State University.
