This report gives an overview of waste disposal methods, then focuses on sanitary landfills. The aim of a sanitary landfill is to minimize the amount of leachate filtering through the landfill into the groundwater below. The proper construction of a sanitary landfill, and the proper construction sites are discussed. The Richland County Landfill is evaluated according to this background knowledge. Of special interest is the hazardous waste stored at the landfill. The site was found unacceptable to store anymore hazardous wastes, and monitoring of the site was implemented to check groundwater quality. Such monitoring will be necessary even after the landfill's fast approaching closure, for a period of years.
