Abstract

Colophon: This book was created to celebrated the 400th anniversary of the publication of the First Part of El Ingenioso hidalgo don Qvixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra in 1605. The passages in this book are taken from the following two editions of Don Quixote, Part II, Chapter 44: Vida y hechos del ingeniouso cavallero Don Quixote de la Mancha, compiesta por Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, En Bruselas: De la Emprenta de Juan Mommarte (1662) and The second part of The History of the valorous and witty knight-errant, Don Quixote of the Mancha, Written in Spanish by Michael Cervantes and now translated into English, London: Printed for Edward Blount (1620). [Translation generally attributed to Thomas Shelton.] The original transduction by John M. Bennett is accompanied by a woodcut frontispiece portrait of Cervantes by Sidney Chafetz along with an afterword by James A. Parr. John M. Bennett is currently Curator of the Avant Writing Collection at The Ohio State University Rare Books and Manuscripts Library and, since 1974, he has published a wide variety of experimental audio and visual literature by artists from all over the world under the imprint of Luna Bisonte Prods. Sidney Chafetz has produced an internationally acclaimed body of work as a printmaker, including numerous portraits of authors and cultural icons. His multi-color reduction woodcut portrait of Cervantes for this edition was printed by cutting away portions of the surfaces of two woodblocks, and after each color was printed, repeating this process of cutting and printing until almost none of the woodblocks' surfaces remained. James A. Parr is Hispanics lecturer at the University of California-Riverside. He has published papers on Spanish Classics and specially on Don Quixote. He is currently President of The Cervantes Society of America. This book was designed and printed by Robert Tauber, Book Arts Specialist at The Ohio State University Libraries. The font used for John M. Bennett's transduction is Johnee's Scrawlphabet, created from Bennett's own calligraphy by James Wiese. The remaining text was set in Adobe Garamond Pro, designed by Robert Slimbach and based upon the types of the sixteenth-century printer, Claude Garamond, and Twentieth Century MT, originally designed by Sol Hess (1896-1953), the American type designer who managed the Lanston Monotype library of fonts from the early to mid 20th century. This book was hand-printed on a letterpress from photopolymer plates onto Rives Heavyweight mouldmade paper, and was handsewn into Hahnemühle Bugra mouldmade paper wraps.
