University Days : from My Life and Hard Times

Abstract

Colophon: James Thurber was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1894. He attended The Ohio State University from 1913 to 1918, after which he left for Paris, returning to Columbus two years later. He published his first book, Is Sex Necessary?, with E.B. White in 1929. University Days, Thurber's humorous reminiscence of his studies at OSU, was first published in My Life and Hard Times by Harper Brothers Publishers in 1933. This edition of University Days was designed by Robert Tauber is limited to One Hundred Seventy-five copies hand-printed by Russell McKnight on Twinrocker cotton rag paper at The Logan Elm Press & Papermill, the Arts-of-the-Book Laboratory of The Ohio State University. The text was set in Eric Gill's Joanna types at Harold Berliner's Typefoundry. Lettering for the title page was designed by Ann Alaia Woods. Sidney Chafetz' frontispice portrait of James Thurber was printed from a woodblock using the reduction method of cutting portions of the wood before printing each color, thus destroying the block in the process. Sidney Chafetz, Professor Emeritus, has been an artist and teacher at the Ohio State since 1948. He is noted for his literary portraits and satirical images of political and academic life. This book was bound by hand at The Logan Elm Press, Summer 1990. The cover paper was handmade by Russell McKnight using pulp beaten from OSU black academic robes and white cotton athletic shorts.
