Martha Garland describes her academic career at the university. After completing her bachelor’s degree in history at Tulane University, and her master’s degree at Cornell University, Garland first came to OSU as a doctoral candidate in 1971. Since then she has been a teaching adviser, an academic advisor, a Professor in the Department of History, a member of the University Senate, Associate Director of Continuing Education, co-chair on the Committee of the Undergraduate Experience and Vice President of Academic Affairs. Garland also discusses many of the changes and challenges the university has undergone in the past forty years: the change from open to selective admissions; the end of University College; the start of the First Year Experience Program; the founding of the Honors and Scholars programs; the preservation of the Land Grant "mission" of the university; the diversification of the student population; the switch to semesters, the establishment of the Student Advocacy Center, and the multiple attempts to restructure the College of the Arts and Sciences.en_US
