Lyall's research focuses on the dynamics of violence in both conventional and guerrilla warfare, with special emphasis on Afghanista​n and Russia’s Northern Caucasus (particularly Chechnya). His works draws on diverse methods, ranging from historical and cross-national comparison​s to field and quasi--experiments at the subnational and local level.
