The work by medieval Muslim Scholar al-Zamakhshari (1075-1144) known as al-Qistas al-Mustaqim (The Just Balance) is one of a number of authoritative sources on the rules of classical Arabic quantitative metrics. The Just Balance treats exhaustively the sixteen meters and the concept of metrical deviation. Including a translation of the book and a glossary of the important poetic terminology, this thesis introduces in English the science known as 'arud and provides a methodology for determining the meter and variations of a given line of verse. In addition, the role of metrics in researching the oral tradition of pre-Islamic Arabia is discussed.
