Monthly Variation in Phosphate and Related Chemicals Found in the Sediment in the Island Area of Lake Erie, 1967-68, With Reference to Samples Collected in 1964, 1965, and 1966

Samples of sediment collected in 1964, 1965, 1966, and on a monthly basis from May, 1967 through November, 1968, were analyzed for total phosphate, iron and organic carbon. Samples were collected by means of an Ekman Dredge and by means of a core technique developed by Dr. Skoch. The cores were sectioned at 2.5 cm intervals and each of the six sections was analyzed for the same factor. Results of the analyses showed only a slight increase in phosphate since 1964. However all three factors showed a definite increase from May, 1967 through November, 1968. The two sampling methods yielded slightly different results. The sediment was found to consist of two distinct layers, with the upper 5 cm of sediment being usually higher in concentrations of materials than the lower portions
