THE VIBRATIONAL SPECTRA OF ${CO_{2}}^{+}, {CO_{2}}^{-}$, AND ${(CO_{2})_{2}}^{-}$ TRAPPED IN SOLID NEON.

Ohio State UniversityAbstract:
New experiments on the photoionization/Penning ionization of $CO_{2}$ by excited neon atoms, coupled with rapid quenching of the products in an excess of solid neon at approximately 5 K, have led to the identification not only of the previously $reported^{1}$ $\nu_{3}$ absorptions of ${CO_{2}}^{+}$ and ${CO_{2}}^{-}$ but also of the lowest component of $\nu_{2}$ of ${CO_{2}}^{+}$, which is split by Renner-Teller interaction, and of $\nu_{1}$ and $\nu_{2}$ of ${CO_{2}}^{-}$. In addition, several absorptions can be attributed to ${(CO_{2})_{2}}^{-}$. Detailed isotopic substitution experiments provide evidence for the stabilization of two different structures of the dimer anion.
