Abstract

Furan and CO form a Van der Waals complex where the CO sub-unit lies above the plane of furan. In contrast to the pyrrole-CO complex, the microwave spectrum exhibits noticeable splittings of the individual rigid rotor transitions. The splittings can be attributed to a hindered internal rotation of CO above the plane. Spin-statistical weights suggest that the large amplitude motion permutes the equivalent protons in the furan sub-unit. Results from the microwave spectrum of the parent species recorded in the range between 8-18 GHz using a molecular beam Fourier-transform spectrometer will be presented. The analysis was performed with either a rigid rotor Hamiltonian or with an approximate rotation-internal rotation Hamiltonian.
