A 17, 1690-1694 (1978). en_US dc.description.abstract Double S transitions corresponding to $\Delta J = +2$ arise from the contribution of the intermolecular interaction by the anisotropic component of the polarizability of a molecule in the quadrupole field of its collision partner. U branch transitions corresponding to $\Delta J=14$ arise from the hexadecapolar induction mechanism in the colliding pairs of molecules. Collision-induced transitions ${S_{1}}(J) +{S_{0}}(J)^{1}, {U_{1}}(J)$ and ${Q_{1}}(J) + {U_{0}}(J)^{2}$ in the infrared fundamental band of $H_{2}$ and ${S_{2}}(J) + {S_{0}}(J), {S_{1}}(J) + {S_{1}}(J)$ and ${Q_{1}}(J) + {U_{1}}(J)$ in the 1st overtone region of $H_{2}$ have been studied for high gas densities of normal $H_{2}$ at 77 K. Some of the experimental results include those obtained with solid normal- and para- hydrogen samples for the transitions in the fundamental band of $H_{2}$ at $10 K^{3}$. Present investigations also include observation of double S transitions in the infrared fundamental band of normal $D_{2}$ at 77 K.
