A study has been conducted to examine the effect a near one-dimensional rod-like ferromagnetic object oriented accurately in the z-direction (perpendicular to the surface of the Earth) had on the total magnetic field of its surrounding area. The total induced field was measured using a proton recession magnetometer. The data collected was used to generate maps showing the magnetic signature of the object. The amount of iron in the object was quantified, as to provide some guideline to the level interference one can expect when taking magnetic data near above ground magnetically susceptible objects.
