Abstract

The $\nu_{3}$ fundamental vibration-rotation band of $NH_{2}^{+}$ has been observed in the $3\mu$ region with a difference frequency spectrometer as the infrared source and the velocity modulation technique for detection. $NH_{2}^{+}$ was produced in an AC glow discharge with approximately 50 mTorr $NH_{3}$ and 6 Torr He. The spectrum is composed of many triplet lines indicating the electronic symmetry of $^{3}B_{1}$ like the isoelectronic free radical $CH_{2}$. Preliminary analysis shows that $NH_{2}^{+}$ is more quasi-linear than $CH_{2}$ in the ground state, which agrees with theoretical predictions on this $species^{1}$. More detailed analysis with comparisons to theory will be presented.
