MOLECULAR SYMMETRY IN ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC FIELDS

The symmetry classification of the rovibronic levels of a molecule in field-free space follows from the full rotation group and the feasible permutation-inversion group, which give the quantum number J and the rovibronic symmetry species $^\Gamma$evr respectively. In this paper the modifications in this classification for a molecule in an electric or a magnetic field are considered. The results remain valid for high fields, and specify which levels may perturb each other. Effects associated with time-reversal symmetry are included.
