VIBRATIONAL RELAXATION IN LIQUID NITROGEN AND OXYGEN

Stimulated Raman scattering from a Q switched ruby laser was usedto populate the $\nu = 1$ vibrational level in liquid nitrogen and oxygen. The $V \rightarrow T$ relaxation was then monitored by observing the increase in scattering from a HeNe laser interrogating the vibrationally excited region. The experimental results have been compared to the Isolated Binary Collision Theory of vibrational relaxation in liquids.
