NEW RESULTS IN ZERO-FIELD PARAMAGNETIC-RESONANCE (ZFPMR) OF RARE EARTHS

The design and construction details for a new zero-field paramagnetic-resonance (ZFPMR) spectrometer will be presented. The phenomenology of resonance in zero external magnetic field will be discussed, as well as its application to the observation of magnetic dipole transitions for ions and molecules in the 1 to 12.4 GHz frequency range at low temperature. Spectral data for paramagnetic rare earth ions in diamagnetic hosts will be discussed with particular emphasis on ions in the S-state.
