The series of the isomorphous anhydrous rare earth trichlorides have been investigated by means of laser Raman spectroscopy. The Raman active electronic and phonon transitions have been observed and assigned to symmetry types. The shift of phonon frequencies with a varying mass of the rare earth ions is discussed.
