Abstract

Transitions between torsional energy levels of liquid dinitrogen trioxide were observed in the far-infrared by means of interferometry. With the aid of a two-fold Matthieu equation, the frequencies were interpreted and the height of the barrier hindering internal rotation was calculated. The barrier height is discussed in relation to the general nature of internal rotation.
