VIBRATIONAL SPECTRA AND STRUCTURE OF CHLOROACETIC ACID.

The vibrational spectra of chloroacetic acid have been studied in the liquid and solid states. Spectra of sodium chloroacetate have been determined to aid in the assignment of the fundamental vibrations of the parent acid. Chloroacetic acid, in the solid state, exists in three polymorphic forms, each of which gives distinct spectra. The relationship of these polymorphic structures and their spectra will be discussed, both in terms of intramolecular modes and the low frequency intermolecular hydrogen bond motions.
