Abstract

A simple method is discussed for directly recording the percent transmission of a gas in the 600-1000 A region of the vacuum-ultraviolet. No reflecting surfaces other than the concave grating itself are used, and only one phosphor-photomultiplier is needed. Two Hopfield continuum light sources are employed, but without differential pumping. Since the partial pressure of the sample is not measurable, only relative absorption coefficients may be obtained. The present bandwidth of $2.0 {\AA}$ is limited by the intensity of the sources. The absorption spectrum of $N_{2}$ and of the halogen diatomics are presented as an illustration of the technique.
