Abstract

Cross-sections for the quenching of fluorescence from $v^{\prime} = 50 B^2\Pi_{o_{u}+}$ state of $I_{2}$, excited by Cd $5086 {\AA}$ line, have been determined for a number of inert gases. Even taking into account the longer lifetime$^{1}$ of $v^{1} = 50$ the cross-sections determined are larger than previously determined cross-$sections^{2}$ for quenching of fluorescence from $v^{\prime} = 25$ and $v^{\prime} = 15$. It is believed the larger cross-sections may be due to a collisional release mechanism as proposed by $Callear.^{3}$ Vibrationally inelastic cross-sections have also been determined; $\Delta v = \pm 1, \pm 2$ are the only transitions observed even though $\Delta G_{v+{^1/_2}""}$ is only 0.15 kT in these levels. $^{1}$ Brewer and Chutjian, J.
