There exist numerous theoretical expressions for the solvent dependence of electronic absorption spectra in the absence of specific chemical interactions. However, experimental tests of these theories in their most accurate forms are lacking, probably because of the difficulty of the numerical analysis involved. Such tests of two of these theories will be presented, the two being the McRae theory and the Lystay theory. Non-spectroscopic applications of these theories will be discussed briefly.
