STRUCTURE AND COORDINATION IN EUROPIUM CHELATE LASER MATERIALS

Europium $\beta$-diketone chelates presently used in liquid lasers assume a number of distinct molecular structures in solution. These structures differ in the coordination surrounding the central ion, both with regard to the number of coordinating groups and their geometrical arrangement. In solution all the various coordination states exist in equilibrium with each other, and these equilibria can be shifted by changed in temperature, solvent, or substituent groups on the ligand. The spectroscopic and laser implications of these effects will be discussed.
