Abstract

The vibrational spectra and assignments for all members of the cyanoethylene molecular series, except vinylidene cyanide, have been $reported.^{1,2}$ The series is herewith completed. The infrared spectrum of vinylidene cyanide has been measured from 250 to $4000 cm^{-1}$. A tentative assignment, based on frequencies calculated from the overlay force constants of acrylonitrile, fumaronitrile and tricyanoethylene, has been confirmed through combination with the assigned frequencies of tetracyanoethylene in a successful overlay normal coordinate analysis. An average set of Urey-Bradley Force Constants for the entire series has also been determined. $^{\ast}$ Aided by the National Science Foundation. $^{1}$ Paul Devlin, John Overend and Bryce Crawford, Jr., Spectrochimica Acta 20, 23 (1964). $^{2}$ O.
