dc.description.abstractThe far-infrared and Raman spectra of various polyhalide ions including $M^{+}{I_{3}}^{-}$, $M^{+}I_{2}Br^{-}$, $M^{+}{Br_{3}}^{-}$, $M^{+}{I_{5}}^{-}$,$M^{+}I_{4}Br^{-}$,$M^{+}{I_{7}}^{-}$, and $M^{+}{I_{9}}^{-}$ for $M^{+}=Cs^{+}$, $(CH_{3})_{4}N^{+}$, $(C_{2}H_{5})_{4}N^{+}$, etc. have been recorded and analyzed. The fundamental vibrational frequencies for each of the ions are below $210 cm^{-1}$. The frequency patterns allow classification of the various ions according to structural units. For example, ${I_{5}}^{-}$ ions may be $({I_{3}}^{-})(I_{2})$ and ${I_{9}}^{-}$ may be $({I_{5}}^{-})(2I_{2})$.en_US
