dc.description.abstractThe $a3^\Pi$ state of MgO was earlier characterized from perturbation of the $X^{1} \Sigma^{+}$ state. Doppler-limited, single mode, cw dye laser excitation spectra of the $B^{1} \Sigma \leftarrow a^{3} \Pi_{j}$ bad system have been recorded in a $Mg + O_{3}$ flame, while monitoring $B^{1}\Sigma^{+} \rightarrow X^{1}\Sigma ^{+}$ fluorescence. Improved rotational constants have been determined for the $a^{3} \Pi _{j}$ state and will be reported. The role played by the metastable $a^{3} \Pi _{j}$ electronic state in the $Mg + 0_{3}, Mg + O_{3} + CO, Mg + N_{2}O$, and $Mg + N_{2}0 + $CO flames will be discussed.en_US
