The $^{51}V$ nuclear hyperfine structure (I = 7/2) is essentially fully resolved, and shows that both $^{4}\Sigma^{-}$ state follow case $b_{BJ}$ coupling. About 3000 lines have been measured. The most interesting feature of the band is that internal hyperfine perturbations between the $F_{2}$ and $F_{3}$ electron spin components $(J=N \pm 1/2)$ occur in bath $^{4}\Sigma^{-}$ states; these are caused by matrix elements of the hyperfine Hamlitonian diagonal in N but off-diagonal in J. The observations of centre dips, Q branch transitions and lines with $\Delta F \not= \Delta J$ have permitted the spin and hyperfine constants for the two states to he obtained separately despite the parallel polarization of the transition. The $C^{4} \Sigma^{-}$ state requires two $\gamma$ ‘s (spin-rotation parameters) for a full description; this indicates the existence of a nearby unseen electronic state, possibly $^{2}\Sigma^{+}$, that is yet to be characterized. en_US dc.format.extent 88811 bytes dc.format.mimetype image/jpeg dc.language.iso English en_US dc.publisher Ohio State University en_US dc.title LASER-INDUCED FLUORESCENCE OF GASEOUS VO; ROTATIONAL AND HYPERFINE ANALYSIS OF THE $C^{4}\Sigma^{-} X^{4} \Sigma^{-} (0,0)$ BAND en_US dc.type article en_US
