Abstract
Visible absorption spectra in the liquid phase measured with thermal lensing spectroscopy and in the gas phase measured withy photoacoustic spectroscopy are reported for homologous series of alkenes, non-conjugated dienes, and nitriles. The major absorption peaks are identified as overtones of the C-H stretching due to inequivalent C-H bonds in these molecules. The overtone spectra are analyzed in terms of the local mode model which treats the molecule as a set of loosely-coupled anhormonic oscillators localized on individual C-H bonds. Relatively less intense peaks are assigned as combinations of a local mode C-H vibration with some lower frequency normal mode of the molecule.
