THE VIBRATIONAL SPECTRUM AND STRUCTURE OF THE STABLE CONFORMER OF CIS-2-PENTENENITRILE

The Raman and infrared spectra of cis-2-pentenenitrile have been recorded for the gaseous, liquid and solid phase. The similarity of the Raman spectra of the liquid and solid phases indicates that one conformer predominates at all temperatures, and the large number of polarized Raman lines shows that this conformer has a non-planar (gauche) structure. A vibrational assignment has been proposed for all vibrations except the asymmetric torsion based on existing assignments for simpler molecules.
