Abstract

The infrared and Raman spectra of matrix-isolated and solid 1,3-dithietane ($SCH_{2}SCH_{2}$) have been recorded. The ring appears to be puckered in the matrix, but the mutual exclusion observed for the crystalline solid is consistent with a planar ring conformation. The implications of this conformational change and the complete vibrational assignments will be discussed. The sulfine molecule ($H_{2}CSO$) has been generated by pyrolysis reactions of 1,3-dithietane-1-oxide and allyl methyl sulfoxide at $350^{\circ} C$ and trapped in an argon matrix. The infrared spectra have been recorded, and a complete vibrational assignment will be presented.
