RESONANCE ENHANCED CARS STUDIES OF EXCITED STATE SPECIES

In this technique, two losers are used to generate the coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectra while a third later is used to generate excited state species. The third loser is tuned to an allowed vibronic transition of the molecule and allows a high population of the excited state species to be formed. The absorption spectrum from this excited state is then obtained to determine the pump frequency to be used to generate resonance enhanced CARS spectra. The resonance enhanced CARS spectrum can then yield geometry changes between excited states. If a study of the ground lo excited state spectrum is also made, then ground state to second excited state geometry difference can be made. Many of the excited states cannot be probed directly because of the symmetry of the final stale (e.g. gerode excited states for centro-symmetric molecules). Results to date will be presented.
