Dimethyl-tartrate is the only molecule that has been found to show a degenerate coupled oscillator vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectrum. VCD spectra of this molecule in the O-H and C=O stretching regions will be presented. Both VCD features have bisignate shape but opposite signs. This is one of the first VCD measurements in the C=O region. Temperature dependence of the O-H VCD has also been studied. Both can be qualitatively interpreted by using the degenerate coupled oscillator model. Combined with nmr data, a dominant conformation in solution will be proposed.
